What Is Oral Microbial or DNA Testing?
Oral Microbial testing is a simple, non-invasive test that analyzes saliva through an oral rinse sample. A salivary test can help us identify oral pathogens commonly associated with periodontal disease and peri-implantitis, as well as certain genetic markers that may influence how your body responds to inflammation. The sample is collected in our office and sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Gum disease is influenced by more than oral hygiene alone. Two people can have similar symptoms but very different underlying factors that can affect the body’s response to treatment..

What Can Oral Microbial Testing Accomplish?
Depending on the test performed, Oral Microbial testing may provide information about:

- Pathogens affecting conditions such as Cardiovascular disease, Cancers, Diabetes, Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and others

Who Is Oral Microbial Testing For?
Testing is not necessary for everyone, but it can be helpful in certain situations.
We may recommend testing if you have:
- Moderate or advanced gum disease

- A history of peri-implantitis (periodontal disease of an implant)
- Systemic health concerns that may be affected by chronic inflammation

What bacteria does Oral Microbial testing look for?
Oral DNA testing identifies bacteria associated with periodontal disease and peri-implantitis. This includes high-risk pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Tannerella forsythia, and Treponema denticola, as well as several moderate- and low-risk bacteria that may contribute to periodontal disease.
How accurate is Oral Microbial or DNA testing?
Oral Microbial with DNA testing uses PCR (polymerase chain reaction), a highly accurate laboratory method that detects the DNA of specific bacteria associated with periodontal disease. It is an evidence-based diagnostic tool that complements a comprehensive periodontal examination by providing additional information about the bacteria present in your mouth.
How long does it take to receive results?
7-10 days. Once the results are received, your provider will review the report with you and prescribe the treatment plan tailored for your individual needs.
Does everyone need salivary testing?
Salivary testing is generally recommended if you have periodontal disease, recurring inflammation, peri-implantitis, or other factors that may warrant a more detailed evaluation.
